synopsis
Photographer Céline Clanet combines black and white shots, taken in different French forests, and micrographs of organic elements collected in these same territories. Playing with scales, the artist explores the surface of the world and opens the doors to a universe that is both strange and familiar.
In electrical and electronic systems, ground noise is sound interference, parasitic noise, considered harmful. Like that of a flying insect trapped in a lamp, it is a continuous rustling, a buzzing, a vibration that seeks to escape. The teeming world of fauna composed of insects and arthropods awakens primitive reactions in us, and it is precisely this universe, rarely shown, that the photographer reveals to us.
Introduction of Ground Noise monograph, Actes Sud editions, 2023, in partnership with EPA Paris Saclay, Inrae, Hitachi.
« In electrical and electronic systems, ground noise is a signal interference, a parasite noise viewed as a problem. It is a constant buzz, like that of a flying insect trapped in a lamp, a hum, a vibration seeking release. The presence of this frantic insect or this electrical noise is disturbing, and in both cases, people generally try to eliminate them.
A world teeming with fauna, consisting of insects and arthropods, triggers primitive emotions in us. Spiders, even dead and pinned under glass, can still terrify a large human for a brief moment. We have, of course, managed to overcome some of our antipathy to them, through admiration (the incredible work of ants, the beauty of butterflies and moths) or recognition (bees, for example, our essential pollinators). Nevertheless, the world of arthropods remains mysterious, obscure and sometimes disturbing.
This little-known, rarely shown world is precisely what photographer Céline Clanet is interested in. Her black and white series combines shots taken in French forests with microscopic photographs of organic elements collected in those ecosystems. Playing with scale, she explores the surface of the earth and opens up the doors of a strange yet familiar world. »
