synopsis
Retrospection, the word chosen for the title of this work underlines its originality. It is Joel Meyerowitz himself who comments on his work here. With his formidable talent as a storyteller, he offers us his “owner’s tour” in voiceover.
He chose to reverse the chronology. He goes back in time, from his most recent photographs in Cézanne's studio to his very first images taken in the street more than 50 years ago. It was in 1962 that Joel Meyerowitz began walking the streets of New York with a 35mm Leica. Excited by the collective energy of the city, by the tension of the theater scenes that take place there, he sharpens over time an instinctive sense of the unpredictable and immediacy which allows him to capture unexpected images and striking.
This is the first sum dedicated to one of the most famous photographers in the world, recognized as a pioneer of street photography and color. Joel Meyerowitz, now 80 years old, comments on his work with his formidable talent as a storyteller, offering us his “owner’s tour” in voiceover. With 280 images, from the most recent to those from his debut, in black and white, in 1962.
