synopsis
Corps mémorable was first published in 1957 by Pierre Seghers, followed by a new version in 1969, then enriched with unpublished photographs by Lucien Clergue in 1996.
“My “first nudes” of the sea were done in 1956. I presented them to Picasso, on the Place du Forum, in Arles, one morning during a bullfight… He was so enthusiastic that he called everyone to come and see them! And he kept tapping me on the cheek: “Is that you who did that? Is that you?” The following year, it was Jean Cocteau’s turn. He encouraged me to send my work to Pierre Seghers, the publisher of poets. Later, while I was passing through Nice, at the bookseller Matarasso, a telegram from Cocteau reached me: “Happy to have served your cause…” He had succeeded! Seghers was republishing Corps mémorable by Paul Eluard with twelve of my photographs of maritime nudes as illustrations. It was my first book, I was twenty-three years old and had been working in a factory for five years.”
