synopsis
Raymond Depardon achieves the feat of being a photographer as comfortable on a few hectares - the photographs of his parents' farm in the Saône Valley are now famous - as on the great crossings of continents, which are at the heart of this book. His work, whatever the subject, is based on reflection, on an effort of understanding that suddenly makes us close, almost familiar, with the landscapes and the men who populate them. Prostitutes from Saigon, veiled men from the Saharan desert, passers-by from New York, Cairo or La Paz, little girls from Somalia or Afghanistan, all these human beings are captured as if from the inside, without aesthetic effects, without anecdote, without complacency.

about Raymond Depardon
Self-taught, originally from a farming background that he celebrated in his book La Ferme du Garet (1995), Raymond Depardon was successively a reporter at the Dalmas Agency then at the Gamma Agency that he helped create in 1968 then directed (1987) to guarantee photographers an autonomous and responsible operation. It is under this sign of independence and freedom that his career as a photographer and filmmaker unfolded.
